China Honors Grassroots Role Models of the Year

BEIJING, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) — Ten individuals or groups were honored as 2019 role models Thursday at an award ceremony in Beijing held by Xinhua News Agency.

Among the laureates were Eli Niyaz, a forest ranger in Yuli County, northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, who has devoted himself to protecting the trees for over 26 years.

Other laureates include a woman who saved her father by giving skin grafts, a couple who helped a sick hairdresser, a food delivery worker who has only one hand and one leg, a firefighter who removed four burning gas tanks from a warehouse fire, and a group of voluntary teachers.

The role models were selected by netizens and experts.

A special award was given to Zhang Fuqing, a 95-year-old war hero, for his contributions during and after his military service.
